As we move into November, the season of Thanksgiving gives us a special opportunity to pause and reflect on God’s faithfulness. Gratitude is at the heart of the Christian life, and Scripture repeatedly reminds us to give thanks in all circumstances (1 Thessalonians 5:18). For churches in the North Georgia Conference of the Global Methodist Church, this season can be a powerful time of prayer, worship, and witness to the world.

Below you’ll find a resource to help your congregation practice thankfulness through prayer, worship, and community leading up to Thanksgiving.

1. Prayers of Thanksgiving for Worship

Consider incorporating prayers of gratitude into your weekly services. These can be used as call-and-response liturgy, pastoral prayers, or moments of silent reflection.

A Prayer of Gratitude for God’s Provision

Gracious Lord, we thank You for the gifts of daily bread, shelter, and community. You provide for our needs and remind us of Your abundance. May our hearts overflow with gratitude, and may we be faithful stewards of Your blessings. Amen.

A Prayer of Thanksgiving for the Church

Lord Jesus Christ, we give thanks for Your Church—the people gathered in Your name. Thank You for the gifts of fellowship, discipleship, and mission. Strengthen us to serve one another in love and to bear witness to Your goodness in the world. Amen.

A Prayer of Thanksgiving for Creation

Creator God, we lift our voices in thanks for the beauty of the earth—the mountains and valleys, rivers and forests, skies and stars. May we honor Your creation by caring for it with wisdom and joy. Amen.

2. Thanksgiving in Small Groups

Encourage Discipleship bands, Sunday school classes, Bible studies, or small groups to spend time sharing what they are thankful for. A simple structure could include:

• Scripture Reading: Psalm 100, Psalm 136, or Philippians 4:4–7
• Silent Reflection: Invite participants to name a blessing from the past week.
• Group Prayer: Have members voice short prayers of gratitude aloud, one after another, creating a chorus of thanksgiving.
  

3. Thanksgiving at Home

Invite families in your congregation to practice gratitude together throughout November. Provide a list of ideas such as:

• Keeping a “gratitude jar” where family members drop notes of thankfulness each day.
• Reading a Psalm of thanksgiving at the dinner table. (ex: Psalm 107, 136, or 138)
• Writing a letter of thanks to someone who has shaped their faith.

4. A Thanksgiving Litany

Here is a short litany that can be used in worship on the Sunday before Thanksgiving:

Leader: Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good.
People: His steadfast love endures forever.

Leader: For food, fellowship, and daily bread,
People: We give You thanks, O Lord.

Leader: For family, friends, and the gift of community,
People: We give You thanks, O Lord.

Leader: For salvation in Christ and the hope of eternal life,
People: We give You thanks, O Lord.

All Together: With hearts full of gratitude, we praise Your holy name. Amen.

5. Living a Life of Gratitude

Thanksgiving is not just a holiday, it’s a Christian practice rooted in joy and trust. As we lead up to Thanksgiving Day, let us remember that gratitude transforms hearts, strengthens faith, and draws us closer to God and one another.

This November, may the North Georgia Conference of the GMC be known as a people of thanks, proclaiming God’s goodness in our prayers, our worship, and our daily lives.
