Book of Doctrines and Discipline
Global Methodist Church Book of Doctrines and Discipline
Introduction
The Book of Doctrines and Discipline is the foundational guide for the Global Methodist Church (GMC), setting forth the church’s beliefs, organization, and governance. It serves not only as a reference manual but as a spiritual and practical framework for how the church lives out its calling to worship passionately, love extravagantly, and witness boldly.
Adopted at the convening General Conference in Costa Rica in September 2024, this book reflects the collective discernment of leaders and delegates from around the world. The provisions adopted at that conference took effect on January 1, 2025, ushering in a new season of clarity, accountability, and shared vision for the GMC.
For the first two years of its life, beginning May 1, 2022, the Global Methodist Church was guided by a Transitional Book of Doctrines and Discipline. That transitional guide provided stability while the denomination was forming and prepared the way for the more permanent structure affirmed by the convening conference.
Purpose of the Book of Doctrines and Discipline
The GMC Book of Doctrines and Discipline is not merely a rulebook. Its purpose is deeply theological and practical:
-
- Confessional Foundation – It anchors the church in Scripture and in the historic teachings of the Christian faith, as expressed in the Nicene Creed, the Apostles’ Creed, and the Confession of Faith.
- Wesleyan Heritage – It embraces the rich Methodist tradition begun by John and Charles Wesley, emphasizing scriptural holiness, accountable discipleship, and the methodical pursuit of love for God and neighbor.
- Practical Guide – It provides clear direction on matters such as ordination, local church organization, finance, property, and the responsibilities of clergy and laity.
- Accountability & Connection – It ensures that local churches, pastors, and leaders remain connected to one another in mission and accountable in doctrine and practice.
In short, the Book of Doctrines and Discipline helps the GMC maintain unity in essentials, liberty in non-essentials, and charity in all things.
At the 2024 General Conference in Costa Rica, delegates prayerfully revised, expanded, and affirmed the permanent Book of Doctrines and Discipline. While many provisions carried over, some were refined or newly adopted in response to the needs of the global church.
To honor this history, the Global Methodist Church has made both the current and transitional versions available:

Major Themes and Emphases
While the Book of Doctrines and Discipline covers a wide range of topics, several key themes stand out:
1. Doctrinal Standards
The GMC affirms the authority of Scripture as the primary rule of faith and life. This is complemented by the Nicene Creed, Apostles’ Creed, and Articles of Religion. The book outlines core convictions about God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; salvation by grace through faith; the sacraments of baptism and the Lord’s Supper; and the nature of the Church as the body of Christ.
2. The Wesleyan Way of Salvation
Central to the book is the Methodist understanding of grace:
-
- Prevenient Grace (grace that goes before)
- Justifying Grace (reconciliation with God through Christ)
- Sanctifying Grace (growth in holiness and love)
- Glorifying Grace (the final restoration in Christ)
This distinct emphasis shapes discipleship, worship, and mission across the denomination.
3. Church Governance
The book sets forth the structure of the Global Methodist Church:
-
- Local congregations, led by pastors and laity
- Regional conferences that provide oversight and support
- The Connectional Council and General Conference, where global decisions are made
This structure ensures that every level of the church shares responsibility in mission and remains connected in fellowship.
4. Ordination and Ministry
Guidelines for discerning, training, and ordaining clergy are included. The book emphasizes both the calling of clergy and the ministry of the laity, underscoring that all Christians are called to serve.
5. Accountability and Discipline
Faithful discipleship requires accountability. The Book of Doctrines and Discipline provides a framework for church discipline, always with the goal of repentance, reconciliation, and restoration.
6. Mission and Witness
The book insists that the church exists not only for itself but for the world. It outlines the call to evangelism, service, justice, and the planting of new churches so that the gospel may be proclaimed to every corner of the earth.
Why This Book Matters
The adoption of the permanent Book of Doctrines and Discipline marks a milestone in the life of the GMC. It represents:
-
- Stability – offering a firm foundation for new and existing congregations.
- Clarity – providing clear guidelines for leadership, governance, and mission.
- Unity – connecting a global family of believers under shared beliefs and practices.
- Mission – ensuring that everything the GMC does is aimed at making disciples of Jesus Christ.
For clergy, it is a vital resource in leading congregations faithfully. For laypeople, it is a roadmap for understanding their place in the larger mission. For local churches, it provides structure and support as they engage their communities.
A Living Document, Anchored in Truth
Though comprehensive, the Book of Doctrines and Discipline is not intended to be static. Just as the early Methodists met together for accountability and growth, the GMC remains open to the Spirit’s leading. Future General Conferences may adapt the book as new challenges and opportunities arise.
Yet the essentials remain unchanging: the authority of Scripture, the lordship of Jesus Christ, and the call to holiness of heart and life. In every season, the GMC is committed to remaining faithful to these foundations.
The Book of Doctrines and Discipline is more than a manual—it is a testimony to the faith, mission, and vision of the Global Methodist Church. Born from prayer, refined by global leaders, and rooted in centuries of Methodist tradition, it guides us as we step boldly into the future.
As you engage with its pages, may you find clarity, encouragement, and renewed commitment to the mission of making disciples of Jesus Christ.
