Charge Conference
What is a Charge Conference?
A Charge Conference is the annual meeting where each local church connects with conference leadership. It’s a vital time for accountability, planning, and celebration of all God is doing in local congregations. During Charge Conference, we:
-
- Worship together as a District
- Approve leadership
- Approve pastoral compensation
- Celebrate and pray over candidates for ministry and certified lay ministers
- Celebrate spiritual growth and discipleship in your congregation
¶ 438. THE CHARGE CONFERENCE. 1. Within the pastoral charge the basic unit in the connectional system in the Global Methodist Church is the charge conference. The charge conference shall therefore be organized from the church or churches in every pastoral charge and shall meet at least annually.
2. The membership of the charge conference shall be all members of the church council or other equivalent body of the local church who are professing members of the Global Methodist Church, together with retired ordained ministers and retired diaconal ministers who elect to hold their membership in that charge conference, and any others as may be designated in the Book of Doctrines and Discipline. If more than one church is on the pastoral charge, all members of each church council shall be members of the charge conference. – BOOK OF DOCTRINES & DISCIPLINE

How to Prepare for Your Annual Charge Conference
1. Review and Download
- Start by downloading the Charge Conference Checklist and general resources. This will help you track deadlines, required forms, reports, and vital next steps.
2. Complete Required Forms
- Finalize and submit your Charge Conference Report.
- Complete and send in required finance forms: Compensation, Housing Allowance, and Connectional Funding Worksheets depending on your pastor’s housing situation.
3. Lay Ministry Documentation
- If you’re welcoming a new candidate for Lay Ministry, fill out the initial report.
- If renewing certification, complete the Certified Lay Ministry Renewal document.
4. Study the Schedule
- Check your district’s date and location in the Charge Conference Schedule. Make sure to share with your congregation and leadership so everyone can participate.
5. Submit On Time
- All forms and reports should be submitted prior to your scheduled Charge Conference date. Late submissions may impact approval processes.
Why This Matters
Charge Conference is not just procedural—it’s pivotal for congregational life and leadership development. It ensures:
- Clarity in mission and ministry vision
- Transparency in finance and clergy support
- Connection to the larger mission of the North Georgia GMC
- Celebration of church health and spiritual growth
When churches care for the details, the movement strengthens, and each congregation flourishes.
