Job Title:
Lead Pastor (full time)

Position Start Date:
We seek to fill this position by June 2027

About Canton First:

Founded in 1842, Canton First Methodist has served as a spiritual anchor in Canton and Cherokee County, Georgia, for more than 180 years. We are a vibrant, multi-generational church committed to sharing the hope of Jesus Christ through worship, discipleship, and mission.

Rooted in our Wesleyan heritage, we are experiencing a renewed missional urgency. The same Spirit that birthed this church now calls us to GLORIFY God in everything we do, AMPLIFY His message of grace, and MULTIPLY by making disciples who make disciples and planting churches who plant churches.

Our Mission Statement:

“Canton First Methodist Church exists to glorify God and make disciples by sharing our lives with others so that everyone will find hope-filled life in Christ. We are Christ-followers, called to live missionally by intentionally aligning our lives to participate in God’s redemption of all creation. In other words, we look for what God is doing and join Him in it.”

Canton First Methodist Church exists to glorify God and multiply disciples by training and equipping Christ-following SERVANTS who are LAUNCHED to SERVE others in a community that is seeking a HOPE-FILLED LIFE.

This life is found in IDENTITY, PURPOSE, and BELONGING in Christ.  We serve others with a deep passion for MEETING PEOPLE IN THEIR PLACE OF NEED and EMPOWERING them to live in a LIFE-GIVING RELATIONSHIP WITH CHRIST.

The Pastor We Are Praying For . . .

We are seeking a Spirit-filled, biblically grounded, and mission-driven leader who will shepherd our congregation into its next season of fruitfulness and multiplication. The next Lead Pastor will carry forward our mission while discerning fresh vision from the Lord for this new chapter.

Wesley Methodist Church of LaGrange, Associate Minister

 Wesley Methodist Church of LaGrange
 Post Office Box 2170 | LaGrange, Georgia 30241 | (706) 407-0277 | wesleylagrange.com

ASSOCIATE MINISTER TO SENIOR MINISTER

SUCCESSION SEARCH
Wesley Methodist Church of LaGrange, Georgia, is seeking an Associate Minister with the calling, character, and capacity to be considered as the church’s next Senior Minister through an intentional associate-to-senior succession pathway. The candidate will serve alongside the founding Senior Minister during an anticipated three-to-five-year period of shared ministry and leadership development.

Wesley is a growing, intergenerational Global Methodist congregation committed to traditional worship, biblical preaching, warm Christian fellowship, evangelism, and mission outreach. Established in August 2023, the church is entering a significant season of ministry development as it strengthens its staff, expands its ministries, and plans a permanent campus on its new property.

This pathway is purposeful but not guaranteed. It will require continuing mutual discernment, doctrinal faithfulness, demonstrated fruitfulness, healthy collaboration, congregational trust, and participation in the Global Methodist Church’s consultative appointment process, culminating, if mutually affirmed, in an appointment by the bishop. The transition will be guided by written expectations, regular evaluations, mutually discerned milestones, and progressively greater responsibility as readiness and confidence deepen.

The Associate Minister will help shape Wesley’s next chapter through biblical preaching and teaching, pastoral care, disciple-making, evangelism, leadership development, strategic planning, and visible community leadership. Particular emphasis will be placed on engaging and discipling children, youth, young adults, and younger families while faithfully shepherding the whole intergenerational congregation. Responsibilities will broaden progressively as trust, fruitfulness, and readiness deepen.

Wesley seeks a leader deeply committed to Jesus Christ, grounded in the authority of Holy Scripture, thoroughly Wesleyan in theology and doctrine, and clearly aligned with the Global Methodist Church. The ideal candidate will be a faithful preacher, pastoral shepherd, developer of leaders, and servant-hearted visionary who can assume and exercise meaningful responsibility while helping the congregation make disciples of Jesus Christ who worship passionately, love extravagantly, witness boldly, and spread scriptural holiness across the globe.

Essential Qualifications and Alignment

  • An ordained Elder in the Global Methodist Church, or an ordained clergyperson from another denomination who is eligible and willing to complete the Global Methodist Church’s clergy application and transfer process; a Master of Divinity degree from an accredited seminary is required.
  • Clear affirmation of the doctrines, discipline, moral teaching, and connectional order of the Global Methodist Church.
  • A demonstrated life of prayer, biblical study, sacramental faithfulness, pastoral integrity, and holiness of heart and life.
  • A strong record in—or clear evidence of exceptional potential for—biblical preaching, pastoral leadership, disciple-making, evangelism, and congregational trust-building.
  • Readiness to relocate to LaGrange, Georgia, and become a visible, trusted pastoral presence in the congregation and surrounding community.

Preferred Qualities

  • A compelling biblical preacher and teacher who communicates theological truth with clarity, conviction, and pastoral warmth.
  • A courageous, humble, and biblically grounded pastor-theologian.
  • A committed Wesleyan disciple-maker with evangelistic urgency.
  • A relationally engaged shepherd marked by emotional maturity, spiritual depth, resilience, and integrity.
  • A collaborative and operationally capable leader who equips staff and laity, clarifies responsibilities, develops healthy teams, and moves ministry from vision to implementation.
  • An emotionally secure transition partner who collaborates well with the founding Senior Minister, exercises increasing authority with humility, earns trust through demonstrated fruitfulness, and is prepared, if appointed, to lead the congregation confidently into its next season.
  • A pastor eager to invest personally in LaGrange, Georgia, represent Wesley Methodist Church faithfully, and serve both the wider community and the Global Methodist connection.

This is an uncommon opportunity for a gifted Wesleyan pastor to help shape a growing congregation, serve alongside its founding Senior Minister, and prepare prayerfully and deliberately for Wesley’s next season of senior leadership.

Interested Candidates Should Submit

  • a cover letter describing their sense of call and interest in the succession pathway;
  • a résumé or curriculum vitae, including education, ordination status, ministry appointments, and leadership experience;
  • a statement of ministry philosophy addressing Wesleyan theology and doctrine, preaching, disciple-making, pastoral leadership, and evangelism;
  • links to two complete sermon videos recorded within the previous twelve months;
  • the names, roles, and contact information of three references, including a supervisory leader, a lay leader, and a ministry colleague or staff member.

Materials should be submitted to Dr. Steve Dodson, Presiding Elder, at steve@thomsonfirst.org, with “Wesley Associate Minister Search” in the subject line. All inquiries and application materials will be handled with appropriate confidentiality.

References will not be contacted without the candidate’s prior knowledge and permission.
